On the northern coast of Capri, at the centre of a wide cove, is situated Marina Grande, around which a lovely village has developed. Every day the ferries and hydrofoils that link the island to the other places in the Gulf of Naples disembark here. From Marina Grande the centre of Capri, Piazza Umberto I -world famous meeting place the so-called "piazzetta", can be reached by cable car in three and a half minutes. In via C. Colombo, near the church of S. Costanzo, where the remains of the isle's patron saint are preserved, the "scala fenicia" (Phoenician Stairs) begins. This is the ancient path cut out of the rock with more than 500 steps and contrary to that suggested by its name, it dates back to ancient Greek times and until 1877, the year in which the present road was built, was the only way to Anacapri. Visited for its well-equipped beach Marina Grande is also the starting point for circumnavigation of the island and other interesting sea trips such as a visit to the Blue Grotto.
