ARONA
Arona (province of Novara) is a tourist resort, commercial centre and the road and railway junction for the south basin of Lake Maggiore. In the Piazza del Popolo, in the lower part of the town, you can see the fourteenth century Casa del Podestà (governor’s house) with its arched portico, and the Church of the Madonna di Piazza, designed by Pellegrini and built in 1592. Arona’s Civic Museum, in the upper part of the town, has archaeological exhibits, and mineral and fossil collections. There is also the Church of Santa Maria Nascente, begun in the fifteenth century and finished by the Borromeo family in the seventeenth, and the Church of the Santi Martiri, which has a baroque façade and a Gothic interior.
