PASSIGNANO SUL TRASIMENO
This summer resort is situated on a headland on the north side of Lake Trasimeno in the province of Perugia. The old town is enclosed in its walls and retains its medieval character. The modern part of the town has tourist, bathing and sports facilities. You can visit the Renaissance Church of San Rocco and several fifteenth century houses. On the plain to the north-east, between the lake and the hills, is the site of the Battle of Trasimene (217 BC) where Hannibal inflicted a savage defeat on the Romans with the death of 16,000 legionaries. Isola Maggiore is the second biggest of the lake’s islands and the prettiest. On the west side of it, there is a typical fishing village overlooked by the twelfth century Romanesque Church of San Salvatore. Near the cemetery is the fourteenth century Gothic Church of San Michele Arcangelo which has frescoes of the Umbrian and Tuscan schools, painted between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries.
