CASTIGLIONE DEL LAGO
This is the principal town on Lake Trasimeno and it stands on a headland on the west side of the lake in the province of Perugia. It was inhabited first by the Etruscans and then by the Romans, and in the Middle Ages it became a fortified town before passing into the hands of Perugia at the end of the twelfth century. The medieval castle on the top of the hill has walls with polygonal battlements, four towers and a keep. The Palazzo Ducale stands in the main piazza and has late-Renaissance frescoes. The Church of the Maddalena, in Corso Matteotti, has a neoclassical façade and a panel (16th century) painted by Eusebio da San Giorgio, a follower of Perugino. The Church of San Domenico, in Piazza Caporali has a fine eighteenth century ceiling.
About 13 km away is Panicale, a little village which has the remains of its medieval walls and gates and where embroidery and lace are still produced in the traditional way. You can visit the Collegiate Church with its Renaissance doors, and the Church of San Sebastiano which has two sixteenth century frescoes, the Martyrdom of St Sebastian and the Coronation of Mary, painted by Perugino.
