Magliano in Toscana
This ancient town in the Grosseto hinterland was called Fepa by the Etruscans, and Heba by the Romans, who made it a municipium. At different times, it was a stronghold of the Counts Aldobrandeschi, part of the Siena Republic, property of the Medicis and then of the Lorraine family. You can visit the sixteenth century walls built by the Sienese, the Romanesque Church of San Giovanni Battista built by Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the fifteenth century, the Gothic Church of San Martino, and the Church of the Santissima Annunziata with the Madonna del Latte depicted in frescoes and a painting by Neroccio. There is also the Palazzo dei Priori, the Palazzo del Capitano with the coats-of-arms of the town’s governors on the façade, and the little Palazzo di Checco il Bello. Also worth visiting are the nearby remains of the Church of San Bruzio dating from 1000, and the sixth century painted tomb “of the Chimeras”.
