Description
This thermal resort is situated south of Pontedera on the slopes of a hill covered with olive groves and vineyards. Its curative waters have been known since Roman times but the first thermal establishment was built in 1311 by the ruler of Pisa, Count Federico da Montefeltro. Its present fame is largely due to the interest that the Grand dukes of Tuscany took in it, and it was they who rebuilt and enlarged the spa in the eighteenth century. The present modern complex was built in 1968. The medieval village of Rivalto and the parish churches of Casciana Alta and Chianni are worth visiting.
