Description
Merano is the second biggest and second most important town in the Alto Adige. It stretches over a wide green valley on the right bank of the River Passirio and is encircled by lofty Alpine peaks. The town has many interesting sights to see, including the Gothic Cathedral, built in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries; the fifteenth century Gothic Church of Santa Barbara; the aristocratic residence called the Principesco Castle rebuilt in the fifteenth century in its present form by the Austrian Archduke Sigismund; Via dei Portici, in the heart of the old town, which is bordered with low porticoes under which there are many shops; and the Civic Museum with its archaeological, mineral, pottery and ethnographic collections, paintings by Tyrolean artists and Gothic sculptures. There are many beautiful gardens, elegant town houses, and hotels in the neoclassical and art nouveau styles. The modern part of the town extends from the road on the bank of the river to the suburbs of Maia Alta and Maia Bassa. The Winter Walk and the Summer Walk, with the white statue of Empress Elizabeth of Austria, are very attractive. The hydro is a modern treatment centre set in a park, with a swimming pool and conference centre attached.
