Bormio, tel. 0342-903300 Autonomous Agency for Hospitality and Tourism, Trafoi, tel. 0473-75034 Ski Facilities: 2 funiculars, 1 chairlift, 11 ski lifts. Description The pass, located at 2758 meters in altitude, brings together the Valtellina with the Val Venosta. It is the only Italian ski station specializing in summer skiing. Because of its high elevation and the impracticability of the only road that reaches it, it remains closed in the winter and instead opens from May to October. The lift facilities, 2 funiculars and 8 ski-lifts of various length, are situated on the Piana glacier and reach a height of 3500 meters. The slopes are extremely varied: the “Nagher” is only for the most expert; the others, "Tuckett" and "Spirit," are for indicated for skiers of average ability. Cross-country skiers can train on the “Passo” trail, which leaves from near the pass and is 5 kilometers long. The itineraries for alpine skiers are excellent. The most desirable destinations are Mount Cristallo (3434 m), Tuckett Pass (3354 m), and Punta degli Spiriti and the stretch leading to Alpini Refuge. Excursions by foot and by bicycle are also possible. Hotel accomodations are localized, besides those at the Stelvio Pass, in two other centers connected by the funicular: Trincerone, at 3050 meters, and Livrio, at 3117 meters. |
