Description
Cited for the first time in a document from 1228 as a county controlled by the Signori of Tyrol, today Ortisei is the regional capital of the Gardena Valley and one of the most important tourist resorts in the Dolomites. It is spread out in the valley basin, surrounded by the imposing masses of Sasso Lungo, Rasciesa, Odle and Sasso Piatto. The ski area of Ortisei is provided with many lift facilities, some situated near the town, others around Seceda and Siusi. Among the slopes in this area, we note

"Nogler,” "Pialat" and "Piz Ronc,” where the world championships took place in 1970 and where the now-mythical parallel slalom competition between Gustavo Thoeni and Ingemar Stenmark was disputed in 1975. We recall also that Ortisei is included in the large circuit of the "Dolomiti Superski,” which permits one to ski with a single pass in 12 different areas, for a total of 150 km of slopes, of which 50 have artificial snow. Itineraries for cross-country skiing are not lacking. There are two circuits along the Gardena River and also the “Pinei” slope, 5 km long.
The after-ski activity includes numerous possibilities: squash and covered tennis courts, bowling, ice palace, swimming pool, handicraft shops with objects in sculpted wood and wrought iron, boutiques, bars, restaurants and discotheques.
To see, the 18th-century parish church of S. Ulrico, the Chapel to the Fallen, the chapel of S. Antonio and the Museum of the Gardena Valley.
