The Versilia
The Versilia is a strip of coastline in the north of Tuscany. Its tourist and beach resorts are world famous for their beautiful long beaches, high profile hotel facilities and renowned night spots and discos. The beach resorts of Marina di Pietrasanta and Lido di Camaiore are on the coast road that runs between Viareggio and Forti dei Marmi. Life in the Versilia is marked by important traditional festivals, the most important of all being Carnival in February. The long stretch of coast has a fine sandy beach and gardens with palms, oleanders and tamarisks. The place to walk is the sea front avenue, the town’s passeggiata, where some of the bathing establishments and shops are in the Art Nouveau style. Not far away is Torre del Lago Puccini, the great composer’s summer residence.
