Description
Sestriere is situated on a sunny hill in the magnificent setting of the West Alps between the Dora Riparia Valley and the Chisone Valley, and is the best known tourist location in Piedmont. Entirely owned by the Agnelli family, it was created from nothing between 1928 and 1932 and was conceived and built solely for skiing. The architecture is modern with many apartment buildings and hotels, of which the most impressive are the towers which have become the symbol of this famous winter resort that has nothing of the character of the old mountain villages. The downhill runs on three separate slopes start from 2823 m and have a total length of 120 km. We would particularly mention the “Direttissima”, the “Kandahar Slalom” and the “Kandahar Banchetta” which were designed for international competitions. The Sestriere ski-lift network is part of the Via Lattea complex which links the various Piedmont resorts with a total piste length of 400 km, high enough up to satisfy the most demanding skiers. At the lower levels, there are 450 snow machines which can cover about 60 km of piste with artificial snow, when necessary. For Alpine skiers there are the climbs on Mount Rognosa and Mount More Freddo and for cross-country skiers there is a 3 km trail.
There are plenty of après-ski activities including skating, a driving school on ice, a kart track, squash, tennis, basketball, body building, cinemas and discos. And of course there are pizzerias, trattorias and restaurants with traditional Piedmont cooking, such as bagna cauda, polenta concia, salami and cheese from the valleys as well as wine and liqueurs flavoured with Alpine herbs.
