Description
It was greatly to the advantage of this old medieval settlement that it became one of the favourite resorts of the Austrian aristocracy during the Hapsburg period. Nowadays it is one of the most famous summer and winter resorts throughout the whole of the Alps. It lies above the Campiglio Valley and is surrounded by the Dolomite peaks in the Brenta mountain range, to the west of the point where the Presanella group branches off. The skiing complex is divided into three separate centres – the Spinale-Grostè Pass centre which has most of the ski-lifts, the Five Lakes-Pancugolo area to the west in the Presanella direction, and the Pradalago-Mount Vigo centre in the north towards the border of the Sole Valley. Among the numerous runs of varying difficulty, we mention in particular the “Direttissima Spinale”, the “Nube d’Oro”, the famous “3-Tre” where a World Cup giant slalom is held every year, and the “Canalone Miramonti”. Please note that the Madonna di Campiglio ski-lifts are linked with those of Folgarida and Marilleva, making a total of 120 km of downhill piste of which 18 have an artificial snow programme. Cross-country skiers have a variety of possibilities on 30 km of specially prepared trails, both in the Campo Carlo Magno Pass and in Patascoss area. Alpine skiers also have challenging and interesting routes at their disposal in the spring. The classic routes are the climb on Mount Sella (2917 m) and the opening of the Tre Sassi.
Après-ski services and entertainments include sports clubs, banks, a post office, medical services, chemist shops, craft shops, boutiques, cinemas, a games arcade, restaurants, mountain refuges, pizzerias, bars, beer halls and discos. We recommend that you try the local game, pork shin, strangolapreti, canederli, strüdel and grappa flavoured with Alpine herbs
