RIVA DEL GARDA
This little town in the province of Trento is situated at the north end of Lake Garda between the slopes of Mount Rocchetta and Mount Brione. It is a popular holiday destination, an elegant health resort and a busy commercial town. You can visit the Rocca (fortress), originally Roman but enlarged and altered over the centuries. It is four-sided, with towers, and is set in the lake and connected to the mainland by a drawbridge. In the nineteenth century the Austrians turned it into a barracks and it now contains the Civic Museum and Library. At the heart of the medieval town is the Piazza III Novembre which is partially surrounded by fourteenth century porticoes. The thirteenth century Apponale Tower rises on one side and opposite it are two palaces, the fourteenth century Palazzo Pretorio and the fifteenth century Palazzo Municipale. The elegant early baroque church called the Inviolata, built in 1603 by an unknown Portuguese architect, is also interesting.
Only four kilometres away is the pretty health resort of Torbole, situated at the foot of Mount Baldo. The tourist resort and historical town of Malcesine is 18 km away on the east side of the lake in the Veneto area.
