Description
This popular holiday resort is situated at an altitude of 550 metres amidst the green hills of the Chiana Valley. The ancient Church of San Giovanni Battista (later rebuilt) is in the walled medieval part of the town. It contains a beautiful fresco by Rustichino and a fourteenth century wooden crucifix. Nearby is the late sixteenth century Church of Santa Maria della Rosa. You can also visit the museum of sacred art with works from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, in Via Solferino. The thirteenth century Palazzo del Podestà and the modern Parish Church of Santa Maria della Stella can also be visited.
The thermal waters of Chianciano have been known since Roman times but the spa’s popularity is relatively recent. The neoclassical buildings which were put up between 1920 and 1930 were redesigned and modernised in the years following the Second World War. The Sant’Elena spring is in Viale della Libertà which connects the old town to the new. A little further on there are two parks, the Fonti and the Fucoli.
