Description
Situated at the foot of the Euganei hills, to the south-west of Padua, Abano Terme is now the best mud therapy centre in Europe, thanks to its specialisation and the high standard of its facilities and organisation. The therapeutic qualities of the radioactive waters that come from the Montirone springs and its mud cures have been famous since Roman times. Abano’s great popularity is recent, however – it is only in the last few decades that its many hotels have sprung up to take advantage of the underground thermal waters.
The town is mostly modern, with beautiful tree-lined avenues. You can visit the Church of San Lorenzo, first built in the tenth century but completely rebuilt by Carato in the eighteenth. The pointed brick bell tower dates back to the fourteenth century.
