Valle del Chiese - Conca di Tione

The inhabitants have always called it "La Busa". This green plain, with Tione in the centre, is situated in the heart of Val Giudicarie. For centuries it has been a sort of natural crossroads for Lombardy, through Valle del Chiese, or towards Pinzolo and Valle Rendena, or Ponte Arche and Trento, or Bleggio and Riva del Garda over the Duron Pass. Closed by the peaks of Adamello, Brenta and the last slopes of the Ledro Alps, this vast plain, through which the Sarca and Arno torrents flow, is dotted with eight villages dating back at least to the year one thousand.
Centres of mainly agricultural tradition in which, today, a family type of tourism has developed, they are characterised by many small hamlets, sometimes of only three or four houses. On the mountainside, at the edge of the fields, there are many attractive huts in wood and stone (featuring blocks of pepper and salt coloured granite) for keeping the hay. The grass, cut with meticulous care right to the edge of the wood, is vital for feeding the cattle and therefore for the difficult and hard earned life of the farm.
For the whole of the 19th century this valley suffered mass emigration, especially to Canada and the United States where the men often found work as grinders and the women worked in the clothing industry. The extremely poor mountain agriculture left no alternative. The abandonment of their land and home and uprooting of their origins have left a mark on the life of the people and caused a thousand human vicissitudes.
The economy has improved, thanks to the establishment of some small industries and craft centres, but mostly due to the tourist activity these villages have elected to undertake with increasing decision in recent years. There are many fish farms, fed by the clear waters of the Sarca, in which excellent salmon and brook trout are bred. There are many pleasant walks on the Tione mountain from where you can enjoy a magnificent view of Carè Alto and Brenta, towards the Valbona lakes on Durone and Cima Serra and towards Gavardina and the Ledro Alps.

Valle Rendena

The memorable ostentation and vanities of the Hapsburg Court in Madonna di Campiglio and a life of hardship and mass emigration in search of work, was the destiny of the villages crossed by the imperial carriages to the resort at the foot of the Brenta Dolomites. These are, perhaps, the most evident contrasts in the history of Valle Rendena, now one of the greatest tourist attractions in the whole of Trentino. A very green valley framed by superb mountains, Adamello, Presanella and the Brenta Dolomites, dotted with villages rich in history and tradition that, since the abandonment of field work, have become places of genuine and simple hospitality in the manner of mountain people.
Besides the incomparable natural beauties, rightly protected in a Nature Park, the life and traditions of the Rendena people should be probed with curiosity. The yellow polenta and the "trisa" to stir it in the copper pot are still used today. The wheelbarrow, instead, with the grindstone to sharpen knives and the grinder are symbols of this valley abandoned for decades by youth and men in their prime. The so-called "Molete" emigrated almost everywhere in the world in search of work.
Madonna di Campiglio, Pinzolo and the whole of Valle Rendena owe most of their current fortune to beautiful mountains. Indeed places like the Vallesinella Waterfalls, Campanil Basso or the Path of the Bocchette, right in the heart of the Brenta Dolomites, are unique, as are the San Giuliano lakes and peaks like Care Alto and the Lobie or Mandrone glaciers in the Adamello Presanella mountains .
Places visited every summer, like the many refuges, by hundreds of thousands of people attracted by the legendary charm of the Dolomites or by stories of the White War that stained the peaks with blood during World War I.
The green Rendena, through which the river Sarca flows, has also a dense network of paths and several side valleys. The most famous one is Genova, a real paradise of nature furrowed by the tumultuous water of a branch of the torrent flowing down from the Mandrone glacier. Climbing to the summit, or just walking in the woods (perhaps looking for mushrooms), let us remember that we are in the heart of one of Trentino's Nature Parks. You only have to look around you to guess the reason.

Valli di Sole - Pejo and Rabbi

Surrounded by the Ortles Cevedale, the Adamello Presanella and Brenta mountain ranges, Valle di Sole stretches from Tonale Pass, the natural connection with Lombardy, to the Santa Giustina gorge leading to Valle di Non.
Scoured by the Noce river, dominated by glaciers and perennial snow and rich in water, it is enhanced by two deep parallel side valleys, Pejo and Rabbi, both known for their thermal springs. The farm cultivations, mostly orchards, dominate the landscape that, climbing towards Tonale, becomes progressively and typically alpine. Many villages offer a wide choice for those seeking accommodation and relaxation . The uppermost part of the valley and the Pejo and Rabbi side valleys, with the highest mountains, are inside the National Park of Stelvio where nature triumphs. Luxuriant forests, meadows dotted with old wooden hay barns and, climbing towards the eternal snows, a countless number of paths along which you may easily catch sight of roe deer, red deer, mountain goats, eagles and the nice marmots.
As we have said, water is the dominating element in this picture postcard environment. It is present in a thousand versions and moments, from water trickling over a stone to the thundering cascade of waterfalls and the gurgling of the thousand torrents and streams you may have to cross during a walk. A source of wealth when it is turned into energy in the power stations, a source of life for the meadows and man.
In recent years the water has also become the main attraction for canoe and kayak enthusiasts from all over Europe who, in this valley, have found an ideal spot for their sport on the tumultuous Noce rapids. Water that gives an indescribable emotion to the daring sportsmen of rafting in their crazy descents in rubber rafts swept along by the current. Alongside the tourist activity, the local people have preserved the handicraft traditions, especially woodwork and metalwork.
The local produce and good food are an essential feature of the mountain farmer's life. This is evident in the Museum of the Valle di Sole Civilisation in Male with its interesting synthesis of local uses, customs and culture. Another small but characteristic museum-in Vermiglio houses relics of the Great War, fought on the snow of the Adamello Presanella front. These were found by salvagers who, after the war was over, earned their living for years by selling the scrap iron they had gathered and brought down to the valley from the glaciers.

Valle di Non

Every year about 300 million kilos of apples are picked in Trentino and most of the production comes from Valle di Non, the garden of the sweet smelling Golden Delicious and the Renette Canada, perhaps the best known and liked of this mythical fruit.
The people of this valley owe their fortune to apples and a thriving agriculture, although the tourist activity, run on family lines in 38 communes Iying between 400 and 1200 metres a.s.l., has contributed considerably to improving the appearance of many villages.
Valle di Non is the most populated valley in the province of Trento with about 38 thousand inhabitants. It extends from the Rocchetta gorge, at the side of Valle dell'Adige and the Piana Rotaliana, to the Palade and Mendola mountain passes going to Alto Adige.
Among the most noted mountains surrounding the valley are the Maddalene Chain and the Brenta Group, but many other peaks, from Roen to Peller, are easily accessible. These balconies offer an impressive panorama of the whole of Trentino.
The characteristic morphology of this vast area consists of a succession of three highlands, divided by gorges and ravines furrowed by rivers and shaped, in ancient times, by the combined action of glaciers and rivers . Besides the cultivation of apples, the very fertile soil of this valley permits good zootechnics. Cheese excells among the local products (in demand the strong Grana Trentino) and many kinds of sausages. Valle di Non is one of the Trentino areas where the 'gropel" grape is still harvested to make the characteristic mountain wine to drink with "tortel di patate" (potato pancake) a typical Valle di Non dish.
Craft work, especially woodwork, is vital and is flanked by some small industries. The widespread welfare, reached in recent decades, has led to more care and attention of the land and environment, and not only of the villages. And so it is lovely to walk among the green expanses in summer and witness the ancient farming ritual of mowing grass or gathering hay.The offer of accommodation in the whole of the valley covers all demands and it is easy to fill one's holiday with sport and outdoor exercise, or motivate it with many outings to castles and sanctuaries.

Altopiano della Paganella

Molveno, Andalo and Fai are the main centres of the tourist district gravitating around Paganella, the mountain overlooking Trento, Valle dell'Adige and the Brenta Dolomites.Naturally linked to the Non and Giudicarie valleys, the highland has a flourishing agriculture and craft activity besides traditions, uses and customs.
Molveno is a tourist resort discovered in the last century by mountaineers going to the Brenta crags. It grew thanks to its enchanting lake in which the mountains are reflected. Here, one of the most beautiful free beaches in the whole of Trentino has been made and equipped with facilities.
The environment changes radically in Andalo and Fai, villages clinging to the Paganella slopes, known for their genuine, warm and cordial hospitality, the expression of a mountain farmer's culture that still survives in part. Proof of this can be found at the table when you ask for 'tortel de patate" (potato pancake) and a glass of good wine, better if in company .
In this area and in other villages along the road to Valle di Non, Cavedago and Spormaggiore, it is still possible to purchase fresh cheese at the dairy and to meet farmers returning with a cartload of hay after a day spent mowing in the green fields .
The natural beauties and environment is summed up in the life of the fields. A holiday up here is one of relaxation (even though anyone who wants an active one will find plenty to do in the sports citadel on the outskirts of Andalo). Not far from the villages you can enjoy a captivating view of Valle dell'Adige or the Brenta Dolomites, the deep blue water of Lake Molveno or the green expanses of Banale and Lomaso towards Val Giudicarie.
