This artificial lake was created by the dam built on the River Coghinas, near the granite gorges of the River Limbara which form the Straits of Muzzone. The dam is 185 m long and 58 metres wide. The lake is irregular in shape and has a capacity of 254 million cubic metres. The hydroelectric scheme came into operation in 1937 and was the first cave plant in Italy. The thermal resort of Tempio Pausania (see Thermal Spas) is about 25 km farther north, in the Sassari province.
