Location
The Hotel is situated in Sovana.
Areas Served: Sovana, 108 inhabitants, but receiving a huge number of daily visitis, it is the most preserved medieval village of the Tuscan Maremma at few kilometres from Saturnia in the River Fiora valley. It is one of the hundred most beautiful villages in Italy, completely immersed in an uncontaminated environment. Inhabited since the Twelfth Century, Sovana was one of the most important Etruscan cities, named Soana , prospering during the Centuries fifth-third b.c., we understand it looking at the magnificent Hellenistic style tombs of its Necropolis. A bishop resided there from the beginning of Christianity, it was at first dominated by the Longobardi dynasty and then by the Franchi one. It became the capital city of the Earldom of the Aldobrandeschi family, enlarging its territory above the entire Grosseto district, and reached new prosperity between the IX and the XIII Cent. You could have an idea of its past medieval splendour visiting its Romanesque-Gothic monuments. Ildebrando Aldobrandeschi di Soana was an important historical character, he was born in Sovana and became Pope Gregory the VII in 1073 a.c., he was known at the time of the fightings between the Emperor and the Pope, and famous all over the centuries because he met Henry the IV at the Castle of Countess Matilde of Canossa in 1077. Sovana decayed and as a consequence was abandoned after the moving of the Bishop to Pitigliano, but its “medieval vestments” remain almost still unravished. Today Sovana is newly born and is the aim-place for an important tourist stream, it is administrated by the Local government of Sorano, named Città del Tufo.
