8/21/99 Safe parking outside Rome and Florence (Sybil)
|
| |
When traveling around in a rented car, where is it safe to park outside big cities, Rome and Florence, etc., that would also provide train or shuttle into the city centers? Airports seem likely, but is there overnight parking available there? |

8/16/99 Safe for classic cars? (Gerard Cappers)
|
| |
I'm thinking of visiting Italy next year, when the restoration of my classic car (Triumph Stag cabrio) will be finished. Most people around me give the advice to leave the car at home: Italy is in their opinion much to unsafe to take a cabrio with you. The chance of damage or theft seems to be very big. Any experiences? Please reply to me directly at cappersg@xs4all.nl |

I've travelled alone to various cities in Europe (London, Vienna, Prague, Berlin, Milan, Paris, Rome, Florence) I use the internet and Rick Steves' books to find and reserve hotels, I always use public transport (rail, metro, bus, I organize my own day trips/tours,I leave valuables(passport, airline tickets, railpass) in the hotel safe, I use a money belt for ATM & credit cards, I know basic phrases in Italian, French, German and I'm usually in the hotel by 9 or 10 pm. Yes, there are beggars and street musicians/acrobats/dancers looking for contributions. I've never felt at all threatened and so far, have had only pleasant interactions with both "natives" and tourists. |
