10/1/99 Driving in Italy (Stan)
Looking for experienced travelers that have driven a rental car and toured Italy from Rome to Venice. Are accommodations easily available while on the road as in the states or are reservations a must at all times?
  10/8/99 Re:Driving in Italy (Irv)
Other than in the big cities(Milan, Florence, Rome, Venice and area around it) you do not need advanced reservations. Buy a current Michalin RED guide; each morning pick a hotel for your next stop and have your current hotel call to make you a reservation. That way you can take your time getting to your next stop. I have done that many times and it works well. Irv
  10/14/99 Re:Driving in Italy (Joe)
Recently returned from driving in Italy. Recommend you get very good maps and understand their sign system. The way you know you've reached the speed limit on the Auto and Super stradas is when your wheels begin to leave the ground. Otherwise, the scenery is beautiful and the small back roads bring you to places similar to Eden.
9/29/99 What is going on with Italy and y2k? (Mangiarelli)
Help!!! I want to give my parents a suprise trip to Italy in Feb 2000. All I have heard is that Italy is not ready for y2k and everything (trains and banks)could shut down.   10/20/99 Re:What is going on with Italy and y2k? (Roland)
Dear Ron, I would like to give you an answer. For me it is very interesting to know, what the world is thinking about Italy. The Y2K problem has been discussed since a long time and I can confirme that, from my point of few, there is no problem regarding the Y2K issue. I'm working for a German company in italy and it is my task to make sure, that we don't have in our company any problem (not only from the IT point of few). Regarding your idea, to come to italy, congratulations. Italy is a very nice and beautiful country. As a german I'm living here together with my family since more than ten years. If you need additional information, please contact me. Best Regards Roland

10/2/99 Re:general information about Sicily (Concetta)
Siracusa is a must. Fantastic museum, Greek theatre, Roman amphitheatre, catacombs. Taormina and the coastline there-abouts is very beatiful. Etna is awesome. Enjoy.
9/27/99 skiing in Umbrie (Marco Pontvuijst)
Are there any skiing facilities or other sport facilities like climbing or biking in the Umbrie part of Italie? Please inform me.
9/27/99 Internet access to check email (Patricia)
Where can one find public access to the internet in Italy? As an example, in the USA, one could generally obtain access in a public library. Is there a similar capability in Italy -- either public or commercial? Thanks.
10/1/99 Re:Internet access to check email (Irv)
It's a good question. If you get an answer please copy it to me. Many thanks. IHP
10/6/99 Re:Internet access to check email (David, Royal Victoria Hotel, Pisa)
Italy is somewhat a backwater for anything related to the Internet and telecom is general, but several public libraries offer some kind of access. Moreover, it is usually possible to find commercial operations offering the same kind of access. To give you an example, as far as I know in my city (Pisa, pop. about 95,000, large university) NONE of the public libraries offers access and only a couple of commercial operations exist offering access at the Internet. In short, findin an access is not always easy, but it is usually possible.
11/13/99 Re:Internet access to check email (Jane)
There are a number of commercial cafes that provide internet access. You have to look it up in the white pages and or the travel guides. The main cities like Rome Florence Milan have cafes where for 10,000 lire you can have 1 hour access. As for free access I have never found any aside form the scarce home surfer. Some museums are now starting to provide computers too!
11/21/99 Re:Internet access to check email (Tanya)
I found a place in Perugia to check your mail. Although I cannot remember its name. We found it just looking around the main piazza. It was a very reasonable price too. It's located off the main square to the left of the Town hall. Hope this has helped even though it's late.
9/27/99 Rome wedding (kay)

My wife and I will be touring Italy in May 2000 for 3 weeks, driving from Rome to Venice using a rental car and will be stopping in the usual tourist cities. Feedback as to auto rental costs, best roads, etc., from those who have traveled this route appreciated.
10/1/99 Re:Touring Italy by rental car. (Aloigi Luzzi Lamberto)
The very beatifull place in Tuscany is Sansepolcro (Arezzo),birth place of Piero della Francesca, very close to the historical cities like Assisi,Urbino Gubbio ,Perugia,Arezzo, Florence, but in central Italy in peacefull country, rich of treking paths and excellent foods and wines.Villa La Castellaccia is my family house, where is possible to spend quite holidays. The B&B is low cost in very ancient house, but very confortable. Please go to visit the villa: http://www.geocities.com/baja/5371 Thanks for your attention Lamberto Aloigi Luzzi
12/15/99 Re:Touring Italy by rental car. (Dave Weigel)
We usually get our best deal on auto rentals in Italy through Kemwell . . . phone 1.800.678.0678 and certainly recommend checking them out. Fodor's Rivages / "hotels and country inns of character and charm in Italy" (from Barnes and Noble)lists some nice accomodations. Prentice Hall Press's "driving tours - Italy" suggests some of "Italy's best kept secrets" including San Leo, located just southwest of the highly commercialized San Marino, and many other interesting sites. You'll be travelling at a beautiful time, seasonally! You'll love this part --and many other regions of Italy!
