12/5/00 Atlantis Traduzzioni (Christy Hurley)
My fiance and I are planning to get married in Italy next year. I've heard someone refer to Atlantis Traduzzioni as a company that helps non-Italians get married in Italy. I can't find them on the Internet. Has anyone else heard of them or does anyone have suggestions for other such companies?
10/25/00 Re:Atlantis Traduzzioni (norma jean bishop)
Dear Christy, in what city are you planning to get married? I haven't found Atlantis. I did find an ad for wedding arrangements in the English Yellow Pages, for Genoa, with a delightful name: "Beautiful Days." Their address is passo Frugoni 4/13 Genoa 16121, tel. and fax is 010588023.
  10/25/00 Re:Re:Atlantis Traduzzioni (Christy Hurley)
Norma Jean, Thank you for checking into this. I was also unsuccessful in finding this particular company. We have instead enlisted an agency in Florence to assist us with the arrangements.
  11/9/00 Re:Atlantis Traduzzioni (Barbara Skinner)
I found a website that specializes in Italian weddings, altho maybe only in Florence, I'm not sure. They definitely do weddings tho, and the address is : sogniitaliani.com Good Luck! Barbara
  11/9/00 Re:Re:Atlantis Traduzzioni (Christy Hurley)
I am happy to report that even though I never found Atlantis Traduzzioni we have chosen Florence-Events to assist with our wedding in Florence. So far, I would strongly recommend their services to anyone thinking of planning an event in Florence.
11/12/00 Chinchiano (Tony Cahill)
Hi (Chio?), In April of next year members of my choir will be staying in Chinchiano. I wonder if anyone would be kind enough to tell us a little about the place. Very few of us have been to Italy before but we arer all looking forward to it. Perhaps someone could tell us about the weather at that time of year and if there are any sights we should see whilst we are there. Also we are keen to find out if there is a rail or bus link to other major cities. Any help would be greatly apreciated. If anyone has any photo's of the area they would be a tremendous help as well. Also can someone tell me if there are any pieces of music that we could sing for the local populace?? I'll give the info on our choir in my next posting. Many thanks for any help. Grazia(?) Tony Cahill

I think the city you are referring to is Chianciano (Terme). This is a lovely walled city with a castle, with a thermal spa outside the walls, so you might want to bring a swimsuit. Many people visit Montepulciano for its beautiful medieval-Renaissance architecture. This small town is 5 miles further south and is the closest train stop. In this region, people travel extensively by bus, except to go long distances. Chianciano is also quite near the Autostrada del Sole, the fastest route by car between Florence (about 80 miles north) and Rome (about 100 miles south). In April you can expect the temperature to range between 64F (18C) and 49F (10C). If it rains, it will be cool, and if not, the weather will be perfect. Take a sweater and raincoat. At night, you might be cold, expecially because hotels aren't always well-heated. (Warm pajamas?) Other towns to visit within a 50-mile circumference are Arezzo, with its beautiful, newly-restored Piero della Francesca frescoes, Perugia, with its ancient university, and of course, Siena. One song you might want to learn is "La Maremma," a lament about the fieldworkers (like my great-grandfather) who went to this swampland and often died of malaria. Maremma is near the coast, but only about 1-2 hours from Chianciano. You'll have them crying in the streets! Ciao! Norma Jean

11/5/00 Rome Hotels (shelly friedland)
Seeking advice for hotels in Rome and Florence for late Novemeber. Any suggestions appreciated. Rates up to $200/day. Also, anyone know of the Inn at the Spanish Steps and/or the Hotel Condotti? Would like your thoughts about these. Thanks.
  9/6/00 Re:Rome Hotels (Billy Griffith)
In 1998 while we were in Florence we stayed at the Hotel Balestri. It is on the Arno river just a block from Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi. It is a small family run hotel, the atmosphere was wonderful, the desk clerks speak excellant english and were helpful in finding restaurants and sight seeing destinations. We tried to book them again in 2001 but they were full up on the week that we will be in Florence.
  9/7/00 Re:Rome Hotels (Nicole *)
Hi Shelly Unfortunately for you I don't have a recommendation for a good hotel in Rome but I can tell you which hotel NOT to stay in. ROME- HOTEL IMPERIAL on Via Veneto - It was nice looking, but the 1st night we were there we had no A/C & considering it was about 100 degrees it was VERY uncomfortable. When we asked if they could do ANYTHING to make our stay more comfortable they said there was nothing they could do nor would they change our room. The hotel staff did not speak very good English if at all & They we're not helpful in ANY WAY! So I would not reccommend it. Florence: We just stayed at a nice little hotel there by the name of HOTEL DE LA PACE on La Mamamora. Friendly, English speaking staff, clean & comfortable hotel room but no room service. It was a pretty hotel but had no frills whatsoever. (I personally like a hotel with a bunch of extras) I'm pretty sure it was under $200 a night & it was about 3 blocks from the Duomo & The Accademia (DAVID) so it was a convienient location. If I had to I would stay there again. I hope this helps. Nik

Dear Shelly, I suggest you two hotels in Rome were I stayed and felt very comfortable. They both are near Piazza del Popolo, Piazza di Spagna and so on, that is the very heart of Rome, where you'll be able to stroll at your leisure, shopping in world-famous top-class shops. The hotels are: Hotel Valadier (****) ++ 39 06 3611998 (1920's ambiance, very peculiar) Hotle Mozart (***) ++ 39 06 36001915 (nice and cosy, with some original 19th century furniture). Being Italian, I feel sorry I'm unable to qualify the English fluency of both staffs. Hoping you'll enjoy your stay in Rome, I dare to add some suggestion: - Rome is a lovely town (I'm not a Roman, by the way), so make your visit schedule a lousy one, allowing some time for strolling aimlessly; - you must visit Trastevere and dine there (try the "Rugantino"); - do not believe everything Norma Jean says about Italian males: many of them like very much talking with tourist just to practice English and to exchange travale experience. Yours sincereley Claudio Nebbia
11/15/00 Re:Re:Rome Hotels (norma jean bishop)
Dear Claudio, I appreciate your comment about the motivations of Italian men, and in fact have often had the pleasure of chatting with your countrymen. I wa just trying to encourage a healthy caution in young women.
  11/18/00 Re:Re:Re:Rome Hotels (Claudio Nebbia)
Dear Norma Jean, thank you for your reply, my remark was not an angry one. I appreciate very much your effort in helping tourists feeling at ease in my country.
10/26/00 Agriturismo (Gail deVore)
My son and I are celebrating our birthdays in Italy this November (beginning Nov 2, 2000). We want to stay near Cortona in a rural setting. What is the proper way to reserve our one-week stay? My grasp of Italian is rudimentary, but I can get by - so do I need to e-mail? Have my travel agent handle it? Most seem to not accept major credit cards, so how is a deposit and confirmation handled? Any help you can give is greatly appreciated!!
  8/22/00 Re:Agriturismo (Geri DeNicola)
Last Fall we stayed at an agriturismo in Abbruzzo. The owner had a catelogue of all the places & I think it included other provinces but I am not sure. It was great and only $16 a day pp. I would suggest you contact the Italian tourist bureau to try to get one. the information is on the internet but I don't have the site address now. There were a lot more listed in that catologue than we found on the internet. I don't think we put anything down but once you contact them they will tell you. Good Luck. Geri
  8/22/00 Re:Re:Agriturismo (Gail deVore)
Grazie, Geri. I will try to contact the Italian Tourist Bureau for the catalogue. Hopefully we'll have a confirmed reservation very soon. We're so excited!!
  8/26/00 Re:Agriturismo (norma jean bishop)
In addition to Geri's advice, you can try searching through our listings above (click on hotels, then narrow the search to agritourisms in the Cortona area). If you decide to phone for a reservation, you will probably find someone who speaks English, and you can usually use a credit card to make a reservation. If not, a postal money order or bank wire transfer is acceptable. Happy Birthday, and say hello to Frances Mayes!
