GARDA
The town of Garda (province of Verona) is situated in a bay on the east shore of the lake on the slopes of Monte Baldo. It is a health resort and holiday location with a beautiful little marina for tourists. In the oldest part of the town is the unspoiled medieval fishing village. You can visit the parish church, which was built in the fifteenth century and completely rebuilt in the eighteenth. Traces of the original church can be seen in the bell tower and the cloisters. The most famous building in the town is the Villa Albertini where Carlo Alberto signed the annexation of Lombardy in 1848.
The holiday resort of Bardolino is only three kilometres away. It is also an agricultural centre and particularly famous for its wine. You can visit the twelfth century Romanesque Church of San Severio and the Church of San Zeno dating back to the ninth century. Lazise is nine kilometres from Garda at the most southerly point of the Olive Grove Riviera. The centre of the town is still surrounded by medieval walls and within these you can visit the twelfth century Church of San Niccolò, the Scaligero Castle and the Dogana (customs house) built in the sixteenth century.
Also worth visiting are Punta San Vigilio (3 km) with its sixteenth century Villa Guarienti, and Torri del Benaco (7 km), a health resort in the heart of the Olive Grove Riviera, with a fourteenth century castle and the Church of SS. Trinità, built in the fifteenth century.
