10/7/99 Train travel (Martha Carter)
|

We are traveling by train from Rome to Venice on Oct. 29 and Venice to Florence on Oct. 31. I was able to get the schedules from the net but I can't figure out how to book reservations, purchase tickets, or even how much they are. There are four of us and we want first class tickets. Do we even need advance reservations. We arrive in Rome on Oct. 26 and I would be able to purchase the tickets in the train station in Rome, if necessary. Also, when we arrive in Florence on Oct.31 we will rent a car and spend the night in San Gimignano, next night in Sienna, next two nights in Florence, then Perugia. Any suggestons of places to see or sights we shouldn't miss would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Hi, I have been doing some research on the trains as well. I found a travel Agency called Online travel on the web it is located in Chicago(Sorry, I don't remember the web address). I just called them today and it sells point to point tickets for the trains in Italy. Which gives you the opportunity to purchase them here in the states before you leave. The phone number for Online Travel is 1-800-660-5300. They can give you exact pricing on the ticket for the Destnations you are looking for. Good Luck and enjoy you trip!! |

Hello, My husband and I are going to many of the same places on Oct 16th. I have friends that have recommended two places (Florence and San Gimignano). Florence: Losanna (a small penzione, very inexpensive... about 80,000L for a double, very friendly owners, nice accomodations, quiet area), Address - via Alfieri 9, phone - 39 055245840, fax - 39 055245840 San gimignano: Vallebuia is a very beautiful, inexpensive place.. small and owned/run by a family. Their email address is vallebuia@vallebuia.com, web site www.vallebuia.com, phone - 0039 0 577-941239 Hope that helps, Cheryl |

10/4/99 Train from Rome to Florence (RJE)

I am arriving at the Rome airport at 18:00 and I want to take a train that same evening and head to Florence. I need to get some more information on the train. Does anyone have a phone number or web site that would include time tables and rates for a train ticket, I also wonder if I need to purchase the train ticket in advance, or will there be plenty available on the same day? |

10/6/99 FS-online site (Ka)

Have you seen this site yet? "http://www.fs-on-line.com/eng/index.htm" In my case, I bought train tickets at a travel agency near the station because I wanted to avoid the long queue! The agencies there stop working rather early in the evening, though.... |

10/2/99 Travelling Brindisi/Bari to Siracusa (Concetta)
|
| |
Arriving at either Brindisi or Bari from Greece just before Christmas, travelling to Siracusa by train. Can anyone please give me some information on things to see and do in the Brindisi/Bari area, & between there and the ferry to Messina. We are considering an overnight stay in this region. Any suggestions please? |

I would avoid staying in Brindisi overnight. It is a rough port town and can be dangerous. Arriving early in the day, then leaving before night is the best bet. Is the ferry leaving from Bari or Brindisi? Are you driving or going by train? Based on your answers I can give you some more specific advise. |

Looking for experienced travelers that have driven a rental car and toured Italy from Rome to Venice. Are accommodations easily available while on the road as in the states or are reservations a must at all times? |

Other than in the big cities(Milan, Florence, Rome, Venice and area around it) you do not need advanced reservations. Buy a current Michalin RED guide; each morning pick a hotel for your next stop and have your current hotel call to make you a reservation. That way you can take your time getting to your next stop. I have done that many times and it works well. Irv |

Recently returned from driving in Italy. Recommend you get very good maps and understand their sign system. The way you know you've reached the speed limit on the Auto and Super stradas is when your wheels begin to leave the ground. Otherwise, the scenery is beautiful and the small back roads bring you to places similar to Eden. |
