LAKE GARDA

|
Castles, churches and villas in the Garda interior |
|
 |
This itinerary leads to discovery of the wealth of Garda's historical and artistic patrimony and its hinterland, represented by Scaligero castles reflected in the waters of the lake itself, Romanic churches set amongst the olive groves, and noble 16th-17th centuries residences.
From Malcesine, where you should visit the Scaligero Castle (see picture) with its adjacent museum and the Palazzo dei Capitani, you continue in the direction of Castelletto where you can admire the Romanic chapel of "S. Zeno de l'oselet", attacched to the cemetery; from there, you reach Torri del Benaco which boasts another Scaligero Castle with an adjacent museum dedicated to peach and olive growing. From here, you go on to Garda, where you are warmly advised to visit the Villas Albertini and Guarienti and the Venetian Palaces Fregoso and Carlotti.
Then, climbing upwards to Marciaga with its 16th century sanctuary dedicated to the "Madonna del Soccorso", from which you continue onwards to visit the 19th century Villa Pellegrini di Castion, harmoniously situated within its environmental context. S.Verolo is nearby and you should visit its Church of the same name, then continue eastwards to Caprino and the Villas Fratta, "dei camini" and Carlotti (with its tiny, adjacent museum).
Turning now towards the plain of Caprino, you quickly come to Ceredello, with its Romanic Church consecrated to Santa Cristina, an then to Affi and its Villa Poggi. Immediately afterwards, you arrive at Cavaion, where you should consider climbing up Monte S. Michele to view the ruins of the ancient Bastia fortifications. Then the route moves on to Sandra' where the neoclassical Villa Mosconi stands, followed by Palazzolo with its Romanic Chapel dedicated to Santa Giustina, situated near the cemetery. The itinerary now proceeds in the direction of Castelnuovo and Valeggio, where you shouldn't miss a visit to the Villa Sigurtà (with its splendid park and gadens), the Castle and the Ponte di Borghetto. This brings you to Monzambano and another Scaligero Castle and to Pozzolengo, with yet another Castle and fortifications.
Lastly, you take the road in the direction of Sirmione in order to admire the evocative Scaligero Castle and then drive back to Peschiera, where this particular itinerary terminates.
Itinerary length: approximately 120 km.

Oil, wine and Gardesana gastronomy |
|
 |
|
This itinerary offers us an insight into the area which produces extravirgin olive oil and the renowned Bardolino, Valdadige and Custoza wines, by travelling along the roads bearing the same names as the wines and oil. In addition, it touches upon other aspects of the local geowing of products such as asparagus and peaches, as well as providing a few words on the gastronomy typical of the Benacense interior.
From Garda, you proceed along the shores of the lake until you reach Torri del Benaco, where you are warmly advised to visit the museum which has dedicated a section to the olive-growing traditions and another to traditional fishing methods. Then you go back to the road again, amongst the olive groves, to Malcesine, a territory which is one of the largest oil producers (it's worth visiting the hinterland by taking the panoramic road leading to S. Michele). Once back in Torri, you climb up to the panoramic Albisano, continuing as before through olive groves to Costermano, where the coltivation of olives slowly gives way to the vineyards (for Bardolino wine). Go on to Rivoli, famous for its Valdadige wine and for the production of asparagus (try some asparagus risotto, it's excellent!), then back through Albare' towards Bardolino, where you should stop to visit the Eremo della Rocca di Garda and the ruins of the convent of S. Colombano.
In Bardolino (see picture), famous for its wine of the same name, it is worth visiting the Romanic Church of S. Severo and S. Zeno.
Still amongst the olives and the wines, you begin the ascent of the moraine-formed hills to Incaffi and its Villa Fracastoro and Cavaion with its Archeological Museum and the beautiful Villa Cordevigo. You go back down to the lake and Calmasino and stop at Cisano, both to admire the Parish Church of S. Maria, as well as to visit the Oil Museum and Zeni wine museum, situated near the two companies'factories.
Nearby is Lazise, with its Castle and Veneto Customs House, whilst Pastrengo rises further back, with some Austrian forts immersed amidst the vineyards. You go on in the direction of Sona, where you can visit the Chapel of Saints Quirico and Giulietta, and then on to Sommacampagna, thus entering the area producing the Custoza wine. Custoza is, indeed, the next stop in the itinerary, with its charnel house as well as its vineyards which produce the wine of the same name. Finally, after crossing Castelnuovo, you return to Lazise and Garda, the initial departure point.
Itinerary length: approximately 100 km.

Napoleone and the Risorgimento in the Gardesano interior |
|
 |
This particulary itinerary leads to the discovery of the scenes of the Napoleonic battles of Rivoli and the Risorgimento battles which involved the southern part of the amphitheatre created by the Garda maoraine. From Garda, you heads off in the direction of Costermano and on to Rivoli, where the battle of the same name was fought and won by Napoleon in 1797 and where you can find the interesting Napoleonic Museum and the obelisk commemorating the event.
From here, you go on to Pastrengo where you should find time to visit the Austrian forts and the area where the Battle of 1848 was fought and where the "Charge of the Carabinieri" took place. Then go on to Sommacampagna, where there are some villas which were once home to the Savoia family during the War of Indipendence. In nearby Villafranca, you can visit the Museo del Risorgimento and see other evidence dating back to the Risorgimento period; at Custoza you can visit the charnel house which contains the bones of soldiers who fought in this area, both in 1848 and then again in 1866.
Another stop can be made at Valeggio sul Mincio to see its Castle and the centre of Borghetto, which is followed by Solferino, in the Province of Brescia, with its charnel house and Museo Risorgimentale, then San Martino with its Tower dedicated to the battle of the same name. From here the itinerary leads back to Peschiera, one of the four strongholds of the Austrian Quadrilatero, preserving a little, historical Palazzo which contains Risorgimento relics.
The itinerary is now coming to an end: following the lake shore for a few minutes, you will already have arrived back in Garda.
Itinerary length: 110 km.
