The Lakes
The romantic and scenic lakes of Italy have always attracted visitors. The beautiful countryside, the Mediterranean vegetation and the mild climate make the lake areas amongst the most thriving health and holiday destinations in Italy. The villages, towns, holiday locations and health resorts scattered along the lakeshores are very popular with tourists. There are regular ferry services linking the main lakeside towns and the islands, which have luxuriant vegetation and traditional buildings. The many grand country houses standing on the lakesides make these areas even more fascinating.
 Garda Lake
It is the largest in the whole of Italy. The beauty of the countryside, the vegetation (vineyards, olive groves and citrus orchards), and its mild climate make Garda one of the most thriving health and tourist centres.
 Como Lake
It is the third largest in Italy. There are attractive tourist resorts with many gardens and fine country houses all along the lakeside. The most popular of these are in the lake centre where the most important health resorts are located.
 Maggiore Lake
Also called Lake Verbano, is the most westerly of the three large Prealpine lakes and the second largest after Lake Garda. Along the lakeside there are numerous tourist and health resorts, with beautiful gardens growing rare and exotic plants.
 Iseo Lake
It is the fourth biggest of the Italian Prealpine lakes. The island of Montisola, the biggest lake island in Italy, is situated in the middle of the lake. Little health resorts are dotted along the banks and the most popular are Iseo, Pisogne, Lovere, Sarnico and Monte Isola (on the island of the same name).
 Garda Trentino
 Idro Lake
Lake Idro above sea level and the highest important lake in Lombardy.
The most important towns on the lake are Anfo, on the left side, and Idro, at the southern end. Both have tourist marinas and little bathing beaches.
 Bolsena Lake
At the centre of the Monte Volsini volcanic group in the Viterbo area, it is the largest volcanic lake in Italy. The main lakeside towns are Bolsena and Montefiascone; Marta, Capodimonte and Valentano are the other smaller towns.
 Bracciano Lake
It is the second largest lake in Lazio. It covers a group of craters of the ancient Sabatine volcanoes. Lakeside towns include Bracciano, Vicarello (and nearby, Bagni di Vicarello, with its thermal), Trevignano Romano and Anguillara Sabazia.
 Trasimeno Lake
Lake Trasimeno is the biggest lake in central Italy. Of its three islands, Maggiore Island and Minore Island are near the north shore, while the largest, Polvese Island, is near the south-west shore. The main towns are Castiglione del Lago, on the west side, and Passignano on the north side.
